The Fantail (Piwakawaka) often graces this series with its playful presence. Revered as messengers in Māori tradition, these cheeky birds weave through the landscape, their delicate feathers shimmering as they dance in pursuit of insects.
Inspired by my autumn 2024 adventure “around the block,” the Haast series captures the serene stillness and remote beauty of Aotearoa’s South Island, from Amberley to Twizel, Wanaka, Haast, the Glaciers, and back through Arthur’s Pass. With winter approaching, this journey allowed me to explore these wild, less-travelled landscapes before the season of hibernation set in.
Three chilly nights in Haast Pass immersed me in snow-clad mountains, limited sunlight, and the profound solitude of Te Waipounamu. The sounds of the valley—birdsong echoing and harmonising with the environment—offered a natural symphony that inspired each brushstroke.
Through the Haast series, I celebrate the connection between humans, birds, and nature. These acrylic paintings are a tribute to the quiet, sacred spaces of Aotearoa, and the mana of our native birds that continue to inspire my artistic journey.
Available as original artworks – ideal for collectors seeking evocative landscapes and wildlife-inspired art.
